Google Search is exploring a new “AI Mode” that will include Gemini-like conversational AI in its primary search interface. The feature, discovered by Android Authority, shows in the top left corner of search results and wants to compete with ChatGPT while introducing Gemini’s capabilities to a wider audience.
Android Authority gained access to an early beta version of Google’s AI Mode via the Google app but found the feature to be incomplete and non-functional. AI Mode shortcuts exist in both the app and the Search widget, but they do not yet function properly.
Multiple sources show that Google is creating an AI mode for search that will behave similarly to Gemini, appearing alongside standard search tabs. The feature will provide AI-powered responses with source links, indicating that businesses should plan for AI-optimized search results.
Redefining Searchability for Businesses
Google’s AI Mode may have a significant impact on brand discovery and audience connection. The key features include:
- Advanced multimodal capabilities
- Contextual search results
- Easy mode switching
- Conversational query assistance
- Follow-up question refinement
- Image uploads for searches
Businesses should adapt their SEO strategy to focus on content authority, conversational SEO, real-time interaction, visual search optimization, and customer intent. Additionally, Google’s November 2024 core upgrade intends to improve search result quality by including more useful content.
