OpenAI has launched “Deep Research,” a new AI tool powered by its O3 model that conducts automated internet research. When given a prompt, ChatGPT searches through multiple web sources, including text, images, and PDFs, to deliver detailed, analyst-level reports in minutes, rather than the hours typically required by a human researcher.
OpenAI recognizes that deep research is still in its early stages and has certain limitations. The tool may struggle to distinguish between reliable information and rumors and often fails to express doubt about its findings. The feature is currently available in ChatGPT’s web edition, with plans to be added to mobile and desktop versions later this month.
Following the January release of Operator, an AI tool for work management and planning assistance, OpenAI has now introduced deep research as its second AI agent of the year.
