Examining your competitors’ links can be achieved through various approaches. First, you can identify your competitors using the Organic Competitors report in Site Explorer. This provides valuable insights into websites competing in your niche.

Then, choose your most significant competitors and opt for the “Open in Link Intersect” feature. This function provides a comprehensive list of domains referring to your competitors, along with information on the number of distinct competitors who have obtained links from these same sites.

You may enter a competitor’s URL into Site Explorer to see the “Best by links” report, which shows what connections your rivals are obtaining and what content they are linking to. 

This report not only reveals the content responsible for generating links to the site but also provides information about the websites linking to those specific pages.

These initial metrics are used to screen sites during the preliminary evaluation stage. Nevertheless, it’s essential to exercise caution with metrics and not rely solely on them to determine site quality. 

Many authority metrics can be manipulated, so it’s advisable to scrutinize each site to minimize the risk.

It’s worth noting that although Google does not recommend purchasing links, many website owners recognize the potential for generating revenue through link placements.

For less experienced site owners, there is a significant opportunity for sites designed primarily for selling links to emerge. Such sites are incentivized to manipulate metrics to appear more authoritative than they are.
